What Are Affiliate Programs?
Amazon began the first affiliate program in 1996, paying webmasters a percentage of the sales that the webmaster sold. Every affiliate had their own code so that when someone purchased an item from Amazon, Amazon would know what affiliate to pay.
There are different ways that merchants pay their affiliates. A "click-thru" means you will be paid a certain amount of money for each customer that clicks on that link. Another is commission, where a percentage of the sales are paid to the affiliate. A "lead" means that the customer doesn't have to buy, but they have to perform another task on the Merchant's website. This could mean filling out a form, signing up for their email program, etc.
