How to Choose an Affiliate Program
Daniel Gray, in his book "The Complete Guide to Associate & Affiliate Programs on the Net: Turning Clicks into Cash," (yes, I recommend this book as well. It has some good info in it) says that we should always strive to select the merchants that compliment the content of our website. He recommends getting to know the product line and not to recommend a product we wouldn't recommend to a friend. He poses the following questions:
"1. What's their reporting like?
2. How do they pay?
3. Is the offer worthwhile? Do you like their commission schedule?
4. What kinds of links do they offer?
5. How are links generated? Is the link procedure simple?"By the way, banners do poorly. I don't click on banners. Do you? Text links sell much better.
Take a look at the merchant's product(s). Are they quality products? What does the website look like? Does that merchant know how to sell his/her product? As affiliates, it should just be our job to pre-sell - to get the customer to click on the link and let the merchant do the selling.
Remember, that every time someone clicks on a merchant link that they are leaving your website. It is a good idea to use a code in all of your links that will open up the new page, yet leave your site open as well. My site is an example. If you have questions, take a look at my code. I don't hide secrets.
You will find that many Internet "gurus" hide their source code. It really is good salesmanship because they want you to buy their book to find that information out.
You and I are in this together. Remember, I am not a merchant, and there is plenty of room on the Internet for us all to do well with our sales and that is what I want for you.
Be very careful when choosing an affiliate program. It was a real shock for me going into sales after "webmastering" mental health sites and communicating with that Internet community. There are some merchants who constantly change the pay process or the amount, and other merchants who have no plans on paying you at all.
Many are making good money and still hold onto their ethics, and there are many more who don't.
Brand name merchants are an easier sell to customers as there is already a trust built there.
Try to pick a product that is selling on the Net already. Your products you pick will have a tremendous influence on your sales. Remember also to target your audience and only put links on your site that relate to your content.
This is a prime time to sell on the Net. I recommend you get started right away if you can. As more and more people join the Internet, sales will become harder.
There are some excellent books out discussing affiliate websites with a lot of advice on how to make good money. Take a look in the "Affiliate Book Section."
Also my personal advice is not to link up with the most popular affiliate programs that you see on practically every site. The well-known ones - the regular "gurus."
Make your site unique and different and let your readers know that they are seeing and learning something different.
Many of these well-known affiliate programs need to shut their doors on taking any more affiliates. Ken Evoy made a PROMISE that he would do that years ago and still nothing. Don't believe everything you hear from such "gurus." Everything you hear is only to make money and make a sale.
